Dunston Power Stations six chimneys rise into the air with rolling fields behind them - on the spot where the MetroCentre now stands in Gateshead.
Electricity from the station supplied Northumberland, County Durham, Cumberland, Yorkshire and as far north as Galashiels in Scotland, as well as Tyneside.
It became outdated and closed in 1981, being demolished five years later as work on the MetroCentre began.
The picture was taken amid the dramatic terraces of Clara Street in Newcastles West End where children dubbed the stations initial three chimneys Tom, Dick and Harry.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken in 1960, transports us back to a view that would later become immortalized in the iconic Michael Caine film 'Get Carter' ten years later. The image captures the majestic presence of Dunston Power Stations six towering chimneys piercing through the sky, set against a backdrop of rolling fields that now make way for the bustling MetroCentre in Gateshead. During its operational years, this power station supplied electricity not only to Tyneside but also to Northumberland, County Durham, Cumberland, Yorkshire, and even as far north as Galashiels in Scotland. However, with technological advancements rendering it outdated by 1981, the station was eventually demolished five years later to pave the way for the construction of MetroCentre. The photograph itself was taken amidst the dramatic terraces of Clara Street in Newcastle's West End. It beautifully captures a moment when local children playfully nicknamed three initial chimneys of the power station as Tom, Dick and Harry. This evocative snapshot from June 13th, 1960 takes us on a journey through time - reminding us of an era when industrial landscapes shaped our cities and communities. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints and encompassing elements such as cityscapes and street life from that decade captured by NCJ; this picture serves as a poignant reminder of our ever-changing world.
