EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a piece of history from 1927-1928, showcasing an advertisement for Player's Weights cigarettes. The rectangular counter card features a reproduction of a captivating horse race scene at its center. In the picture, we witness the start of the race with the starter standing on a platform and excited spectators visible in the background. The artwork is signed by W. Hounsom Byles, who beautifully captured this thrilling moment. The caption beneath reads "THE START, by the late W. Hounsom Byles" paying tribute to the talented artist behind this masterpiece. On closer inspection, we notice that this promotional item offered five Player's Weights cigarettes for just two pence or ten cigarettes for four pence. Adding to its charm, there is a hanging loop attached to the top of this card, allowing it to be displayed effortlessly. Turning it over reveals a label from Mardons - specialists in window novelties and various artistic services such as embossed showcards and frame making - based in Bristol and London. This photograph not only showcases Nottingham's rich racing heritage but also provides insight into advertising practices during that era. It serves as both an intriguing glimpse into history and a testament to John Player & Sons' contribution to tobacco promotion without mentioning any commercial use explicitly.
